Summer Project Time, Rolling Dunes

Its summer project time! I am trying to imitate the rolling sand dunes in my home province of Prince Edward Island. I am using layered silk organza. I used a stitch resist to form wrinkles during the dye process which i am reinforcing with thread. This project doesn't have plans to become clothing, I am working a lot more on textile pieces and a lot less on clothing lately.

 I am working from memory but this is what the wind swept dunes look like

The translucency will allow you to see the sewn in folds on the layers below, showing the ever changing sandy dunes. We'll see how it turns out! i am going home tomorrow and hope to get some work done there on it!

Semester, Advanced Fashion

 

This is my semester's work from advanced fashion. I was taking six credits of this course, and six credits planning the fashion/wearable art show 'Runaway' with two other girls.
 

Artist's Statement for this body of work:

The winding patterns of the Gunnera Manicata leaf are my inspiration for this work. As I looked at the delicate veins, they began to remind me of vines or ivy. Vines grow around structures, changing their appearance and constricting their natural growth and movement below. I’ve subtly restricted the movement of the wearer to create the impression that when they stopped moving, the dress has grown around them and is constricting their movement. To mimic the texture of the leaf, I’ve created a pattern with meandering lines and used different sizes of piping and stitching through the fabric to create a texture to represent different vein sizes in the leaves. All of the fabrics are naturally dyed by hand to allow for slight variation in the shades of the colour throughout.

The garments are made out of fabric I put stitching and thin piping through the meterage to create a textured fabric to cut my pattern out of. There is piping running between all of the pattern pieces. Each dress has between 20-25 pieces in the pattern to create the meandering lines through the body. The lavender fabric is 50% silk 50% cotton, and the rest is silk.
